Much smaller podcast MP3 files

From now on, podcast files will be a little more than one-third the size that they used to be. For example, the original file with the news for September 25th, which was available for the last seven hours on eslbusinessnews.com, was 8.3 megabytes; the new version is 3.4 megs, which will result in much faster downloads. The duration of the podcast is exactly the same, and there should be no noticable different in sound quality unless you're listening to ESL Business News on a really expensive sound system. Future podcasts will be much closer to 3 megs than 8.

Internet Explorer output fixed

I noticed that since a change I made a few weeks ago, the main page was not showing up properly in Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser. I have fixed this. Firefox is a much better browser than Internet Explorer, anyway, so I recommend that you try it. It's free!

With this week's edition of ESL Business News, you'll find that various problems in the RSS feed have been fixed. My thanks to Duncan Baker of the Lydbury English Centre for suggesting that I use feedvalidator.org to identify these problems.

Welcome to the ESL Business News Weblog

I've been doing ESL Business News podcasts for about a month without telling anyone, and this week I put them up live on a website and sent emails to publicize them. I thought the weblog would be a good way to communicate about the site and the podcast. Please forgive my use of the default template for the look of the weblog; it's the default stylesheet for MoveableType, the weblogging software that I use. Eventually I will fix it to look more like the rest of the ESL Business News website.

My first batch of emails have already gotten some good feedback, particularly from Charles Kelly of the The Internet TESL Journal. He has some good advice for anyone creating ESL podcasts at http://www.manythings.org/pod/guidelines.html.

Please consider the comments section of this weblog as a place to add more suggestions for ESL Business News. I'll close comments for individual entries when they get comment spam, but the comments for the most recent entry will always be open.
